About Leslie

Leslie Marqua

This picture pretty much answers “about Leslie” for you, doesn’t it? You saw the picture and you drew some conclusions. And you decided whether or not to read on.

Yup. That’s what people do.

As for my Public “About” — when I was the Managing Director of the Olney Theatre Center for the Arts, here’s what we regularly published about me in the Playbill:

Leslie Marqua
That was then.

Donald and I got married.  My son has a home of his own.  We’re back to being a two-cat household.  My Mother Who Shops and Hoards Things has had her house cleaned out and refreshed. My hairdresser of thirty years became unable to continue his business, so I now go to the Fabulous Bill (thanks to Kerch for sharing him with me).

Donald has a new website (which Kerch made for him). It will feed your need for beauty if you just look at it:

www.donaldthomaslighting.com

MJ and Alison continue to delight and bring me great joy!

MJ and Alison

I’m building an arts consulting business: Hathor Associates (www.hathorassociates.com).  We’ve got some wonderful clients! My hair is longer and blonder than the photo, but I really like the photo, so I’m not going to change it quite yet.  Maybe never.
But I do know who I am. In a very particular order, I am:

  • Sophia’s granddaughter
  • Alvin’s first child
  • Grace’s daughter
  • Milton’s sister
  • Alison’s pseudo mother-in-law
  • Kerch’s friend
  • MJ’s Mom
  • Donald’s!

Then, in no particular order:

  • I listen to country music and opera and rock. They’re the same.
  • I have a pile of books to read before I die. When my son was about 9 or 10 years old, he moved it from my bedside table because it was so tall that he was afraid it would fall over in the night and kill me. I believe that as long as there are unread books, my longevity is assured.
  • I believe in God, and I’m pretty sure that at present, I’m more valuable to Her down here than Up There. If for nothing else, my ability to entertain Her keeps me on terra firma.
  • I survived a bout with breast cancer in 2000. We celebrate the anniversary of my cure on February 14th each year because it was the date of my surgery. That adventure changed me and the list above should probably include:
Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon
Breast cancer survivor.

And I particularly loathe the pink ribbons and the teddy bears and all that little girl imagery that goes with breast-cancer-as-a-cultural-phenomenon. But I am deeply grateful that this same phenomenon has yielded increased public awareness and support and efforts toward a cure. If you’re reading this, ask yourself: “When was my last mammogram? When am I supposed to have the next one?” Just do it. Now.

One last thing:

I do read my horoscope from time to time because the coincidences amuse me. Kerch and I are both Leo, so it’s a mostly shared Horror-scope. Here’s the “Scope” (December 17, 2006) from the day I wrote the first draft of the first iteration of this “About Leslie”:

Let your guard down today, Leslie and don’t feel like you need to perform for anyone. Let your inner core accept the notion that you are perfect the way you are and that you don’t have to externally prove your self-worth to anyone. Let your heart expand and let your mind come to rest. Make sure the pure light within you is lighting the path instead of allowing an artificial mask block the reality of your true identity.

Yup. Will do.

And add to the above list: Fabulous!
